Team 101 – Part 1

When I think of a team, I think of a tactical group of individuals working together, conjoining their forces, combining their minds, and putting forth their every effort on a continuous basis for some betterment of the organization, whether it be a unit or in its entirety.  That is a mouthful of a sentence, right?  Bear with me here.   Now, a team can be made up of various individuals with diverse backgrounds. However, the “thread” that joins them all mentally and physically is extremely tight knit. It almost reminds me of how there’s different animal species in this world, and many in which the DNA is extremely close to the Homosapien race.   However, we look, act, and exist in different ways.  Well, that could be said of a team as well. Team 101 – Part 1 aims to briefly cover this concept.

People look, act, think and exist differently.  However, in their core, that common thread of “DNA” of driving towards the betterment of the organization is undoubtedly present.  One thing about a team is that the individuals that make it up, not only are working day in and day out towards a result, but they also have an overall and universal caring for one another.  Even if that means they might not necessarily see eye-to-eye all the time, or be a big fan of that person individually, but deep down, when push came to shove, that person would be there for the other.  The intertwined thread/DNA is so strong, and it is unbreakable for a period of time.

Teams band together, and they can break apart.  The thread is strengthened after a team has been together for a little while, and then it may weaken.  Then it can re-strengthen after some longevity and many experiences together. So, in other words, the strengthening of a team is cyclical, it is like a long-term relationship. It is strong at first during the “honeymoon” period, could fade a little bit, and gain strength again.   We go through experiences, positive and negative, wins and losses, until at some point when its disbanded.  The reason being is people could be moving on to other focuses, efforts, and desires.  So, my point is a team is extraordinarily strong, the bond is solid, and it is interwoven by these factors that are often difficult to explain. However, you can feel these factors when they are in place and occurring.

Conversely, a group of people working together may look like a “team” on the surface but is far from it.  It’s because the intertwined thread of bonds is not there.  So, when we talk about team building, the only way that is remotely possible is having that bond first.  Without it, everyone is just going through the motions, trying to look good, and really only conducting a symbolic act.
